An afternoon at the vegetable market....

" Shall I not have intelligence with the earth?
Am I not partly leaves and vegetable mould myself."
-  Henry David Thoreau

Yesterday i went to the vegetable market. The market is about 1 h drive away from my home, but it`s one of the closest around and one of the only two where I can do all my vegetable and fruit purchase.

I love the colors and smell of all the fruits and vegetables. I love that you can just walk around, look at everything and talk to the owner. You know it`s fresh and you know where it`s from.

In Africa the markets are the same as in my hometown, with the one exception that you have to bargain. Especially being a white person, because the hike up the price for you about 2-4 times higher as usually. So it`s good if you have someone how tells you beforehand what are fair prices for the vegetables and fruits.

If the people get to know you better, it gets easier and you can walk around and don`t have to bargain too much as before.

You can also by chicken at the market. They are in these baskets. You just go there and by one, they get it out for you i put it right in your hands or wherever you want it. It`s very usually here, they eat there meat fresh and especially if you are in smaller village, you won`t get your meat in supermarket, already made up und prepared.

"It's difficult to think anything but pleasant thoughts while eating a homegrown tomato."
(Lewis Grizzard)
